Creating a strong password is your first line of defense against cyber attacks. We won't enforce any "special characters" in your password, but you will need a password that is strong enough to satisfy our security requirements.
How the strength of a password is calculated?
The first step is to count the number of characters used in a password. Say for instance your password is "0123456789". In this case, you would be using 10 characters. If you used "0123456789!o" you'd be using 12 characters.
Secondly, we look at the combination of numbers, lower case letters, upper case letters, and special characters used. By combining different types of characters, you increase the number of possible combinations to a password. Below we explore the possible password options according to the length of the password and the combination of characters used.
- 10 numbers: 1-0
- If a combination of 10 numbers is used, then, there are 10¹⁰ possible variations of that password that could be used
- 26 lower case letters a-z
- If a combination of 12 numbers and lower case letters are used, then, there are 10+26= 36¹² possible variations of the password that could be used.
- 26 possible upper case letters: A-Z
- If a combination of 14 numbers, lower case letters, and upper case letters are used, then, there are 10+26+26= 62¹⁴ possible variations of that password that could be used.
- 24 special characters: !-@
- If you use a combination of 16 numbers, lower case letters, upper case letters, and special characters, there are 10+26+26+24= 86¹⁶ possible variations of that password that could be used.
